The Evolution of Dentures, from Ancient Times to Present Day

Dentures have a surprisingly long history. While today’s dentures are designed to look natural, feel comfortable, and restore everyday function, replacing missing teeth wasn’t always so advanced. Over centuries, denture materials and techniques have evolved dramatically, giving patients more options for restoring their smiles.

Here’s a look at how dentures have changed over the years.

Early Dentures Were Far from Modern

Some of the earliest known attempts at replacing missing teeth date back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Etruscans of northern Italy used materials such as animal teeth, bone, ivory, and human teeth to create rudimentary tooth replacements.

These early appliances were primarily focused on replacing missing teeth rather than providing the comfort and natural appearance patients expect today. Without modern dental materials or an understanding of oral anatomy, these replacements could be uncomfortable and difficult to keep in place to say the least!

The Rise of Custom-Made Dentures

By the 18th and 19th centuries, denture-making techniques began becoming more sophisticated. Materials such as ivory and porcelain were used to create artificial teeth, while dentists and craftsmen developed better ways to shape dentures to fit individual mouths.

Porcelain became particularly important because it could be made to resemble natural teeth more closely, but it was so expensive that most people couldn’t afford such a restoration. These dentures also still had significant limitations when it came to comfort and stability.

As dentistry continued to develop, dentists gained a better understanding of how the shape of the gums and jaw affected denture fit.

Modern Materials Changed Everything

The introduction of acrylic resin in the 20th century and other modern dental materials represented a major step forward. Dentures became lighter, more customizable, and easier to produce.

Today’s dentures can be carefully designed to complement a patient’s facial features, gum appearance, and natural tooth color. Advances in digital dentistry have also made it possible to use digital scans and computer-assisted techniques to improve the design and fit of certain dentures.

Modern materials can provide a more natural appearance while offering the durability needed for everyday use.

Dentures Have Become More Stable

Traditional removable dentures have improved significantly, but some patients still experience movement while eating or speaking. Dental implants have created another option for improving denture stability.

Implant-supported dentures use dental implants placed in the jaw to help anchor a removable denture. Depending on the patient’s needs, implant-supported solutions can provide greater stability than conventional removable dentures.

Denture technology continues to evolve. Digital impressions, computer-aided design, improved materials, and implant dentistry are helping dentists create increasingly personalized solutions for people with missing teeth. Even though dentures have changed dramatically throughout history, their purpose remains the same: helping people regain their ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
