Don’t Let Your Dentures Dull: How to Keep Them White, Clean, and Looking Great

June 11, 2026

Patients smiling as they brush their dentures

There’s no doubt that getting your dentures is incredibly exciting. But keeping them looking bright and clean? Most patients are less enthused about the work it takes. Because dentures aren’t quite like natural teeth, caring for them the wrong way can cause more harm than good. If you want the easiest and safest ways to keep your new smile looking its best, continue reading.

Rinse After Every Meal

Food particles and debris can collect on dentures just like they do on natural teeth. So, after eating, remove and rinse them under lukewarm (never hot) water to flush away any lingering buildup. This simple habit takes about thirty seconds and makes a big difference by keeping stains from setting in.

Brush Daily (But Gently)

Dentures need to be brushed every day, but you shouldn’t use a regular toothbrush or standard toothpaste. This is because most toothpastes contain abrasives that can scratch the surface of false teeth. Over time, this creates tiny grooves where bacteria and stains can settle.

Instead, use a soft-bristled denture brush and a mild denture cleaner or plain, colorless, scentless dish soap. Also, be sure to brush every surface gently and thoroughly, paying special attention to areas that touch your gums.

Soak Overnight

Most dentures need to stay moist to hold their shape, so soaking is a must. Plopping them into a denture-cleaning solution overnight will keep them from drying out and help break down stains and bacteria that brushing alone might miss. In the morning, rinse them well before putting them back in. Many solutions contain chemicals that shouldn’t go in your mouth.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Just like natural teeth, dentures can stain from coffee, tea, red wine, and deeply pigmented foods like berries and tomato sauce. You don’t have to cut these foods out—just remember to rinse your prosthetics after consuming them. Also, avoid sticky or hard treats, as they can cling to your teeth or even crack them over time.

Keep Up with Dental Visits

Even if you don’t have any remaining natural teeth, your smile still needs regular checkups. During your appointment, your dentist can clean your dentures, check their fit, and spot any early signs of wear or damage.

As you can see, keeping your dentures clean and functioning well doesn’t have to be a chore. By giving them the same amount of attention as your natural teeth and seeing your dentist often, you’ll reap the benefits of your smile for many years to come.
