A crown covers a tooth that is too damaged to hold a filling. It takes the pressure off the remaining tooth structure and lets you use it normally again.
When a filling is not enough
A filling replaces missing tooth material. Once too much of the tooth is gone, a filling has nothing solid to hold on to and the tooth is at risk of splitting. A crown covers the whole thing instead, so the force of biting is spread rather than concentrated.
Crowns are also what goes on top of an implant, and what finishes a tooth after a root canal, because a root treated tooth becomes brittle.
We scan rather than using impression trays, so nothing has to sit and set in your mouth.

What it costs, and how people pay
Price depends on what you actually need, so we look first and tell you the number before anything starts. What we can tell you now is how it gets paid for.
- Insured. In network with most major PPO plans, and your benefits get checked before treatment is planned.
- Medicaid or CHIP. Both accepted, which a lot of Dallas practices will not do.
- No insurance. Our membership plan covers cleanings, exams and routine x-rays from $30 a month, with 20% off other treatment.
- Larger treatment. Cherry, Sunbit and HFD payment plans spread the cost.

- How long does a crown last?
- Many last well over a decade. What decides it is how well the margin where the crown meets the tooth is kept clean, and whether you grind your teeth.
- Will the crown match my other teeth?
- The shade is matched at the appointment. For front teeth that matching is the part we spend most time on.
- Does getting a crown hurt?
- Preparation is done under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity while the temporary is in place is normal and settles once the permanent crown is fitted.
- Do I need a crown after a root canal?
- Usually yes, for back teeth in particular. A root treated tooth loses its blood supply and becomes brittle, and a crown protects it from splitting.
