A dental laser is not a gimmick and it is not a replacement for a drill. It is a precise way to work on soft tissue, the gum and the tissue inside your mouth, with far less bleeding and a much easier recovery than a scalpel.
What a soft tissue laser actually does
It cuts and shapes gum tissue while sealing the small blood vessels as it goes. That is the whole advantage: much less bleeding during the procedure and much less swelling afterwards.
Because it seals as it works, many procedures need no stitches at all, and the ones that do need fewer.
It is used on soft tissue. It does not replace a drill for treating decay, and anyone telling you a laser makes all dentistry painless is overselling it.
What we use it for
- Reshaping a gum line that covers too much of the teeth, which is the usual treatment for a gummy smile
- Releasing a tongue tie or lip tie, where the sealing effect makes recovery noticeably easier
- Treating infected tissue in gum pockets alongside conventional cleaning
- Removing or reshaping small areas of overgrown or irritated tissue
- Exposing a tooth that has not fully erupted so it can be treated or bonded

Not everything is better with a laser. If a conventional approach gives you a better result we will say so.

Numbing, usually less of it
Many soft tissue laser procedures need only local numbing, and some very small ones need none at all. We decide that with you rather than for you.

The procedure
There is no drilling sound and no vibration. Most patients describe a warm sensation and a faint smell, and most soft tissue work takes a few minutes.

Recovery
Less bleeding on the day and less swelling the next. You get written aftercare, and we tell you plainly what is normal and what is worth calling about.

What it costs, and how people pay
Price depends on what you actually need, so we look first and tell you the number before anything starts. What we can tell you now is how it gets paid for.
- Insured. In network with most major PPO plans, and your benefits get checked before treatment is planned.
- Medicaid or CHIP. Both accepted, which a lot of Dallas practices will not do.
- No insurance. Our membership plan covers cleanings, exams and routine x-rays from $30 a month, with 20% off other treatment.
- Larger treatment. Cherry, Sunbit and HFD payment plans spread the cost.

- Soft tissue laser work is generally more comfortable than the scalpel equivalent, and often needs less anesthetic. It is not automatically painless, and we will always numb you if the procedure calls for it.
